Keep in mind that Kim is a solo midwife with office and home visits, as well as labor, birth, and postpartum / newborn checkups. This may mean that your scheduled visit could be canceled with little notice or limited options for scheduling may pose an inconvenience.

Know that the same 1:1 attention is given to each client/family. When it is your time to cross the threshold and meet your new cub, you will want and need the world to stop for you, as well.

All planned home birth families must be familiar with expressing colostrum.

It will likely take a couple of weeks to get comfortable.

Antenatal milk expression (AME) is the hand expression of colostrum in the late 3rd trimester for storage.

Lactogenesis I starts at 14-16 weeks of pregnancy.

Antenatal milk expression helps with the production of more colostrum and helps prepare the parents for early newborn feeding. It also helps with comfort and readiness with infant-led feeding in the first hour after placenta is birthed, which is strongly associated with milk volume production (Lactogenesis II).

Colostrum can be stored in 1 mL and 3 mL syringes with cap. Haaka also makes a set of silicone colostrum collectors available on Amazon.

AME can be started at 36 weeks once daily, 10-15 minutes each time, working up to 3 times daily.

If strong surges occur, progressing in strength every 10 minutes, stop expressing efforts and notify Kim.
